Baptists are Bible People
Historically and currently they emphasise the importance of appealing to Scripture on all questions regarding what to believe, how to worship and how to live. While drawing from the great Christian Creeds and Confessions of Faith, the Bible has the last word. Its teaching is not time-bound to the culture of the times in which it was written. In all the Irish Baptist churches the Bible will be taught, studied and taken into the heart of church life.
They see the church not so much as an institution but as a fellowship of Jesus’ followers. Personal faith in Christ precedes baptism and church membership. This is why the practice of the church is believers’ baptism, involving commitment and consent on the part of the person baptised.
Church life is all about working out the teaching of God's word, the Bible. We meet to hear God’s word explained, to sing God’s praise, to pray together and to celebrate the victory of the Lord Jesus’ death, in the Christian family meal - the Lord's Supper. We also try to care for the needy and encourage one another to spread the Good News of Jesus by all possible means.
By this term they mean the whole range of truths which make up God's Good News. Starting with the truth of God's existence and supreme authority over His created order, the gospel sets out the reality of human failure and disobedience. It makes clear that God will deal with disobedience by punishing all who do not confess their wrongdoing. Although human beings have rebelled against Him, God calls them back to a new relationship with Himself. This is possible by crossing the bridge built for us by the life and death of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of all who believe. His death paid the penalty for all our disobedience and rebellion. But we do not benefit automatically. We need to turn round from living for ourselves, and start trusting God and obeying God’s Son, the Lord Jesus. When this happens, a whole new life begins – it’s called being born again! When God’s gift of new life is received through faith a person joins God's family and starts out on the Christian journey.
At Grosvenor Road Baptis church, we practice the public baptism(by immersion in water) of believers on the profession of their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
